Employee Spotlight: Zoe Richards, Mobile Maintenance Planner at Mount Isa Mines Limited

Get to know Zoe Richards, Mobile Maintenance Planner at Mount Isa Mines Limited.

1. What is your current role and what are your main responsibilities? How long have you been with Glencore?

I joined Mount Isa Mines in 2017 as a facilities attendant and later worked as a data entry clerk before transitioning to my current role as a Short-Term Mobile Maintenance Planner in 2019. In this position, I create the weekly maintenance schedule for our mobile fleet, facilitate communication between the planning and maintenance teams, and maintain accurate records in our Computerised Maintenence Management System (CMMS). I work closely with supervisors, colleagues, tradespeople, and equipment owners to manage both successes and challenges in maintaining operations.

2. Can you tell us a bit about your background and where you grew up?

I’m originally from Brisbane and moved to Mount Isa after my sisters found job placements here. My background is in customer service and retail management, with an early ambition of running a relaxed coastal pub!

3. What inspired you to pursue your current career path?

I didn’t expect to be drawn to mobile maintenance planning, but I’m really glad I am! It offers both stability and a range of experiences, with diverse challenges and endless growth opportunities. Glencore’s support for my graduate certificate in Asset and Maintenance Management, along with continuous training and experiences both above and below ground, has been crucial to my commitment to this career. The consistent guidance and support from colleagues and leadership is incredibly motivating.

4. Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of work?

Outside of work, I enjoy camping with my partner Zac and our energetic dogs, Riz and Roy. We often take them out for runs. I regularly attend trivia nights at the Buffs and most weekends are spent visiting family. I always try to keep busy, whether it's reading, attempting to garden (with varying degrees of success), or studying something online.

Zoe took part in filming Glencore’s recent National Ad Campaign.

5. What do you enjoy most about your job? Can you share a memorable moment or project during your time here?

There are many aspects of my role that I enjoy. Working with interesting people in a collaborative environment, supported by leadership and a dynamic team, makes the work incredibly rewarding. I value the strong professional relationships I’ve built with a few colleagues, which foster open and honest conversations. Problem-solving, whether routine or unexpected, keeps the job engaging. Each day brings new challenges that require creative solutions, making the work both satisfying and fulfilling. One standout moment was going underground for the first time with my partner Zac, a ringfirer. It was a real eye-opener and completely different from what I expected. Later, sharing that experience with my dad was fantastic! Despite the hot, humid, and dark conditions, there’s definitely a strong sense of camaraderie among the underground teams. Their hard work truly deserves appreciation.

6. What is the most challenging aspect of your job?

My role is constantly evolving with new technology and changing operational demands. Managing aging equipment, fluctuating resources, and safety standards presents its challenges. Balancing immediate issues with long-term goals can be tricky, but effective resource management and prioritisation help keep operations running smoothly. Plus, it keeps the job interesting and dynamic every day!

7. What advice would you give to someone just starting out in your field?

As someone relatively new to this field, I recommend focusing on continuous learning and building strong connections. Networking with peers offers valuable insights, and being flexible and open to feedback helps with adaptation. Staying curious and determined is key for overcoming challenges and finding new opportunities. Working in mining is rewarding, providing meaningful work, access to cutting-edge technology, and a chance to contribute to global development.

8. If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?

If given the chance to travel anywhere, I’d choose Peru. Its mix of adventure, experiences, and natural beauty makes it a must-visit destination on my bucket list.
