PCYC in prime position to engage community with infrastructure upgrade

Glencore is proud to be supporting the Mount Isa PCYC, recently providing $205,000 for essential infrastructure upgrades to help them to continue delivering quality, affordable services to the community.

Facility upgrades will include flooring, internal painting, canteen improvements, and new foyer entrance, sound system and gym equipment.

The PCYC wants to foster greater engagement with the general community, especially youth, and hopes the re-designed common areas will create a modern, engaging venue with up-to-date gym facilities.

The PCYC offers a range of youth engagement and community programs giving young people a purpose, motivation, skills and opportunities. Young people are encouraged to get more involved in sport and activities, have positive experiences, learn and be supported by mentors, community leaders and local police officers.

PCYC Programs include RUBY (Rise Up Be Yourself) for women likely to be experiencing domestic and family violence, Chillin' in the Park for young people aged 0 - 13, Youth Support Service, Indigenous Programs, Youth Outreach Programs, Friday Night Lights, Blue Edge Program, Thinkuknow, Team Up, Get Set for Work program, Transition to Success and a Braking the Cycle volunteer driver mentor program to support learner drivers without access to a vehicle.

PCYC Queensland Chief Executive Officer, Phil Schultz, says the PCYC is grateful for Glencore's ongoing support.

"The funding will allow us to improve the PCYC facility for members and allow staff to focus on increasing the youth engagement and early intervention programs," says Phil.

PCYC Mount Isa Branch Manager Sergeant Bernadette Strow thanked Glencore for the grant at an event to announce the planned refurbishments.

"This funding will help us to complete our vision for the Mount Isa PCYC. It enables us to continue to be commercially viable, and focus on the programs to help engagement, not only for our youth, but for the whole community," says Bernadette.

"Our club plays a vital role in the lives of so many of the young people who are at risk, disadvantaged or disengaged within our community."

"With increased financial support, we can be in a stronger position to continue to deliver initiatives that support our communities, giving young people important skills and opportunities."

"The more youth development programs we can deploy, the greater effect we can have on crime prevention, enhancing communities and establishing the leaders of tomorrow."

Glencore Queensland Metals General Manager HSEC, Maryann Wipaki, says Glencore is proud to continue supporting PCYC Mount Isa so the club can continue to offer quality, affordable services to the community.

"We recognise the important role the PCYC plays within our community," Maryann says.

"Glencore and the PCYC have worked together on projects in Mount Isa and Cloncurry for gym upgrades, the Project Booyah program and funding the Cloncurry Activity and Event Officer role."

"By supporting projects like this, the PCYC can positively engage young people, and provide youth and community programs for the whole community."
