QPS Rugby League State Championships held in Mount Isa

Two hundred and fifty Queensland police officers travelled to Mount Isa in April for the Queensland Police Service Rugby League Association State Championships.

Mount Isa Mines sponsored the championships to see it return to Mount Isa’s Alec Inch Oval as part of centenary year events, having last been held in Mount Isa in 2005.

Eight football teams from regions including Cairns, Central Queensland, Southern Queensland, Brisbane and Wide Bay battled it out for the 2023 championship.

Mount Isa Mines sponsored the championships to see it return to Mount Isa for the centenary year.

  • The championships provide an opportunity for teamwork and comradery for police officers.

  • Teams from across the state competed for the title.

Event organiser and Mount Isa Mongrels team manager Sergeant Jake Lacey from Mount Isa Police said it was an opportunity for the host team to compete while showcasing the Mount Isa community.

“It was a great opportunity to show what Mount Isa has to offer and to attract police officers to live and work in North West Queensland,” says Sergeant Lacey.

“Coinciding with Mount Isa’s centenary, it brought around 300 people to town, providing an economic injection for Mount Isa.”

Mount Isa Mongrels finished the championships in fifth place with a 23-2- win over the Far North Queensland Marlins.

  • The Mount Isa Mongrels played against the Central Queensland Razorbacks and then the Northern Stingers, coming away with a 30-4 win over the Northern Stingers.

The championships finished with the Wide Bay Crocs team coming away with the honours, with a 24-10 win over the South East Muddies in the grand final.
