On Tuesday, 19 September, the tight-knit community of Mount Isa came together to commemorate the Miners Memorial Day, a deeply significant event that pays homage to the individuals who have lost their lives in mining tragedies across Queensland.

Mount Isa's mining history is etched in stone, and its very foundations are built upon the dedication of generations of miners. The discovery of valuable minerals in the early 20th century sparked an unprecedented mining boom, fundamentally shaping the town's identity.

The annual Miners Memorial Day is a solemn reminder of the importance of safety in the mining industry.

Despite a regional blackout, more than 200 people gathered to pay their respects at a service held at Mount Isa's Civic Centre.

The Miners Memorial Day was a day of reflection and gratitude. It is a time when the entire community, alongside mining industry representatives and families of miners, gathers to pay their respects.

Surrounded by battery-operated lights, Miner Workers Memorial Advisory Committee Chair Tony McGrady encouraged attendees to reflect on the importance of remaining vigilant about protecting the safety and health of mine workers.

"This function is a memory of those people who were part of the great Mount Isa mining industry and should never be forgotten.

"To me, these events are also a celebration of the vast improvement in the safety in the local mining industry and should be a reminder to management and staff that we must always continue to strive to improve the safety in this vital industry for Mount Isa, Queensland and Australia."

Miners Memorial Day stands as a tribute to the enduring legacy of miners in this resource-rich region. It is a day of reflection, gratitude and unity.

This year, it was not just the past that was commemorated, but also the resilience of the people who continue to shape the town's future.
